Refrigerants like R-22 (Freon), R-410A, and others contain chemicals (CFCs, HCFCs, or HFCs) that can hurt the ozone layer or contribute to global warming. Improper disposal is illegal and environmentally damaging.
1. Follow EPA Guidelines
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act regulates the handling and disposal of refrigerants.
Key Requirements:
Only EPA-certified technicians can recover refrigerants.
Refrigerant must be recovered before equipment disposal or servicing.
It is illegal to vent refrigerants into the atmosphere.
2. Equipment Recovery
Before removing or scrapping an HVAC unit or appliance (e.g., refrigerator, freezer, AC unit):
Use an EPA-certified refrigerant recovery machine.
Capture and store the refrigerant in an EPA-approved recovery cylinder.
Label the container with the type of refrigerant.
3. Recycling or Disposal
After recovery:
Refrigerant can be reclaimed by a certified reclaimer for reuse.
If contaminated or not reusable, it must be sent to a hazardous waste disposal facility.
4. Appliance Disposal Rules
For appliances (residential or commercial) like refrigerators, freezers, or window AC units:
Small appliances still require recovery by a technician or drop-off at a facility that participates in a refrigerant recovery program.
Ensure compressors are not punctured before recovery is completed.
5. Documentation
Maintain records of:
Quantity of refrigerant recovered.
Equipment used.
Destination (e.g., reclaimer, disposal facility).
